How metabolic measurement with the PhysiCal® works

In addition to flow sensors, the metabolic measurement has CO2 and O2 measuring sensors, which are used to determine the fuel profile, giving you an indication of the proportion of sugar and fat used by the body to generate energy. Extremely sensitive measuring sensors must be used for a resting measurement. This procedure, known as spirometry, can be used to measure not only the efficiency of the metabolism, but also the acid load that aggravates the organism, which can lead to disturbances in the complex system of cellular regulation.

Metabolic measurement procedure with the PhysiCal®

In high-tech breath gas analysis, sensors are used to measure the air you breathe and the data is evaluated using special software. The process itself is very simple for the person being measured: they breathe in and out for around three to five minutes through a special mouthpiece. You sit quietly and relaxed. Incidentally, the measurement is taken at rest because in today's society the resting metabolic rate accounts for around 75% of the total energy expenditure in most cases.

As the measurement reflects a nutritional and lifestyle profile of the last few days, you should take a break from training the day before the metabolic measurement or do little physical exertion. In the last two to three hours before the measurement, you should also avoid nicotine, food and drinks (except water).

Determination of oxygen utilization during metabolic measurement with the PhysiCal®

The air we breathe contains approx. 21% oxygen, 78% nitrogen and the remaining 1% consists of so-called noble gases. The human organism can only absorb a limited amount of inhaled oxygen. The body's oxygen uptake depends on the ability of the red blood cells to absorb and bind the oxygen. This process depends on the haemoglobins.

Haemoglobins are iron-containing, oxygen-transporting proteins. The metabolic measurement determines how much of the inhaled oxygen is absorbed by the body and how much is exhaled. The higher the oxygen absorption capacity, the more fats the active cell mass can metabolize into energy.
